תום הוא חתול שונה, אחר. כולם ניבאו שאין לו עתיד, שאין לו מקום בין האחרים רק משום שהוא נולד כחול ולא אפור כמו כולם. מגיל קטן לא התייחסו אליו יפה במשפחתו (כולל הוריו ואחיו) ובין החברים והוא סבל מאוד להיות כחול אחד בין אפורים רבים.

הסיפור מצטרף לסדרת הספרים העוסקים בנושא צבע העור כמו הפיל שרצה להיות הכי, הספר הזיקית הצבעונית ובכלל ספרים העוסקים בקבלת השונה והאחר כמו הספר הביצה שהתחפשה והברווזון המכוער על גרסאותיו שונות לאורך ההסטוריה. כולם בעצם מחדדים את העובדה שכל אחד הוא מיוחד וצריך לקבל את השונה והאחר.
