מנהל המחלקה נאנח קלות, וסוף-סוף אמר :"יכול להיות שיש לבן שנולד לך תסמונת דאון. אנחנו עדיין לא בטוחים, אבל יש סימנים מסוימים שמראים שיש סיכוי לכך." הדברים נאמרו לאט ובזהירות מודגשת.
"אני יודע," עניתי כשחיוך על פניי, "ראיתי מיד כשהוא נולד שיש לנו תינוק מיוחד עם תסמונת דאון."
פניהם היו נבוכות. החלפנו תפקידים, חשבתי לעצמי. מנהל המחלקה ניסה שוב להסביר את מה שכביכול לא קלטתי.
"שוב - אנחנו לא בטוחים, ואנחנו צריכים לעשות בדיקות. זה לוקח מעט זמן, אבל על פי הסימנים..."
